Friday photo foolery

Last Friday night was a lot of fun. It started off a bit pooey as I was feeling rather low by the end of the day - I think it might have just been post-holiday blues and having worked a whole week of long days... who knows?

this was all compounded by the fact that I got to Victoria Station only to find that someone had 'fallen' beneath a train so couldn't get on the tube to go and meet my friends and Joe. I ended up getting a bus and then another train line but it was all a faff and I wasn't in the right frame of mind... pah

anyway, by the time I'd walked past Tower Bridge in all its lovely lit-up glory my mood had improved. Had a lovely glass of pinot grigio and then switched to shorts to minimise calorie damage ;-)

everyone was quite merry by the time I'd arrived and I'd brought my camera to show pics from our paragliding and somehow this turned into a mammoth snapping session with lots of silly poses :-D

Steve wasn't actually aware of where his cigarettes had been before smoked them... hmm

Not sure what style of pose Marie and I were aiming for (but quite like the look of my biceps! ;-)

Me and my lovely girlfriend Jen ;-)

Caption contest anyone? ;-)

what a response... if you actually knew what the actual topic of conversation was...!!!!

Dave's not exactly welcoming of Steve's affections... ha!

but one gives as good as one gets...? ;-)

uh oh, more posing...

this pic makes me crack up!!

that's better...

nice pictures ensue...

me and steve

I'd like this pic of Joe and I if it wasn't so blurred, dammit!

this is better :-)

On the walk home... This pic is a bit dark but Tower Bridge looked rubbish with flash...

I think that's more than enough :-D there were actually 95 pics taken in total, not *all* by me I hasten to add!! but this is more than enough to demonstrate the level of tomfoolery that was reached, rather daft but it's good to be daft sometimes :-)

if you bring yogurt in with you to work...

..don't leave it on your desk, put it straight in the fridge... otherwise it gets warm

when it gets warm, the air inside expands... such that when you finally attempt to peel the lid back it goes pffft and splats yogurt all over your top and, if like me your hair is longer than boob-length, your lovely locks

attractive!!

if you're reading this you've thankfully not been bored to tears by my extensive photo coverage of the first part of my hols (or you've just not yet read it ;-) )

I'm gonna post about the other days (maybe not today though as I've got lots on at work)... whether or not anyone actually reads it (a constant fear of any blogger?!) is by-the-by as I'm enjoying recording my holiday, it's good to have a photo-diary that I can look back on with fond memories :-)

for now, here's a quick round up of the week thus far

Monday - back to work, ick.
My son's day was infinitely better than mine, he got three 'positive red flags' (I thought a red flag was a bad thing?!) and was pleased to see that he'd outgrown all his friends... and is one of the tall boys in the class, but nothing compared to the tallest who is already 6'2"!!
Scary.

I cooked a very nice prawn and vegetable stir-fry (minus noodles pour moi)

Tuesday - got up at stupid o'clock to go to Sam's Psycho Spin Session. The last class I did before my hols involved lots of sprint intervals, hugely enjoyable, knackering endorphin-inducing fun

Tuesday's class was all about the hill work baby. ouchie. had done (what I felt was) enough actual mountain climbing on bikes during my holiday, legs felt like lead!

I was meant to cycle to work and home and go to the gym. I only managed the first part of that plan as I had to work late, dammit :-(

cooked spaghetti bolognaise for dinner with extra lean beef mince - managed to prevent Joe from pouring over 1/2 a bottle of red wine into it... lol... my son might have had a *little* red wine and water with his food in France but let's not overdo it now huh?! I'm also not drinking at the mo so more reason to tell him to bugger off ;-)

found out over dinner that my son had been elected class representative - hurrah! he got at least half of the class votes, not bad eh? He's very pleased as he said he's been wanting to be a class rep since he was at primary school. Just goes to prove that perseverance pays off in the end!

Wednesday - I went to the gym at lunch time to do my first upper body weights session in about 2 weeks. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be but I ached pretty much straight away afterwards, and I still do today!! For dinner we had salmon, wild rice and corn on the cob :-)

Thursday - had a great meeting in the morning regarding my company's charity week early November. I'm representative for our corporate division so I was involved in the brainstorming session and we came up with some great ideas. Our charity of the year is The Alzheimer's Society which I'm very pleased at as, like with cancer, pretty much everyone knows somebody who has been affected directly, or indirectly by dementia, it's such a horrible debilitating disease :-(

My ex's granny had it and the last couple of years of her life were awful for her family to cope with, especially her daughter as Paul's Mum and Gran had always been so close. Towards the end she couldn't remember who she was.

I hope to God that neither I, or anyone I know, ever get that. I think it's worse for the sufferer in the beginning when they first realise something's wrong but don't know what or why, but eventually it must be heartbreakingly harder for their family to cope with because I guess they're still the same person in the end, unlike their loved one. To watch someone deteriorate like must be the hardest thing in the world, it's just cruel :-(

Anyway, re the fundraising idea - it was mentioned that last year during corporate charity week they had a rowing challenge so, fresh from my holiday cycling fun I said "how about a stationary cycle race?". Fortunately everyone thought that was a great idea and it has metamorphosed into a challenge with 2 cycles and 2 goals - one is to cycle the distance from London to Paris (over the course of the week that is!) and the other is to see who is the fastest to cycle a much shorter distance, say 5 miles... We're hoping to have two prizes too. One being tickets for the Eurostar to Paris - keeping with our French theme, and the other is a bike. Obviously we have yet to source these but we do have a sports buying department and various entertainment functions too - so it looks good!

Unfortunately, as Joe pointed out yesterday, given that this is my project and I'll most likely be manning the challenge, I won't be able to take part myself, boo :-(

This means that everyone else has a fighting chance, hurrah! haha kidding, there are some seriously fit people in our head offices, I know one guy, who's also on the climbing club committee with me, who cycles every day from Surrey to Victoria and back again (can't remember the distance but I think it's at least 15 miles each way) come rain, wind, sleet or snow!!

nutter

At lunch I did my dumbbell lower body routine. I figured that, having been able to power up mountains quite effectively the previous week, going back to weight training would be a doddle!

Hmm, that was foolish. I was wobbly and knackered by the end and today... I can't walk properly! EVERY part of my leg and arse hurts like hell!! My hamstrings are the worst, I think it was the deadlift... no, I'm convinced it was the deadlifts!! I'm getting really good at them and keeping my back dead flat with no shoulder rounding - my previous form was dreadful!!

anyway, my son was out last night for his best (female) friend's birthday so Joe and I met up in Fulham as he was collecting the keys to the flat that (fingers crossed!) he is finalising the selling arrangements on. We went to GBK for burgers. I ordered the Buffalo burger as I've read that Buffalo is a far superior meat - higher in protein and lower in fat and cholesterol!

The burger was really tasty but the salad that I ordered instead of chips was a complete let down! It was meant to be salad leaves, pine nuts, cherry tomatoes and avocado... it had most of the ingredients right, but in teeny supply! it was a small plate with salad, not bigger than a side dish and was advertised as a 'main'? Plus, the 'avocado' was in guacamole form and tasted like shit. Luckily Joe took it to the counter and they agreed that it was sub-standard and he got a refund - I'd have rather had a nice salad tbh!

bahh

anyway, got to get on with some work so speak soon

Holiday in French Alps - Day 3

Tuesday morning was when we were booked in to go paragliding (not cheap! 75 Euros for Joe and I and 65 for the boy!!)

So, after another breakfast consisting of muesli, eggs, white bread, white bread, and more white bread (honestly, I ate so much while I was away, it was hideous!!) we met our instructors (is that the right term?!) at the foot of the gondola and took that to about half way up, then had to catch the chair lift to the very top of Mont Chery. It was so weird to be on a ski-lift ascending slopes that weren't covered in snow!!

Here's a pic from the top, if you look you can see Mont Blanc in the background. I really love the juxtaposition of the stark clinical white peaks against the lush green mountains directly in front!

And here are two of our instructors, Manut and Raphael, with their parachutes on their backs.

It was really blowy so the guys said we should wait for it to calm down and we had a picture taken.

All of us, not sure the name of the mountain(s) in the background

For the record, I'd just like to point out that

a) I'm perfectly aware of just how startlingly white I look in this picture but hey, I'm not a sun worshiper!

b) I know now that those shorts do absolutely nothing for me; and

c) my son is NOT THAT TALL!!! haha, he's standing on a stump (I promise you!) and Joe and I are on a slope... I'm 5'8", my son's 5'4"/5" max - just look where his feet are!

saying that, I'm pretty sure by this time next year he will have outgrown me - not bad going for someone whose biological father is a mere 5'7" (as was I when we met at age 15... I grew another inch, he didn't, shit happens ;-) )!

Hmmm we seem to be waiting a looooong time, nice day for it though!

hanging around... although unfortunately not quite literally yet!

Unfortunately, after waiting around for an hour the wind didn't die down. It was blowing the wrong way and, if we'd have taken off, we'd have been blown backwards away from Les Gets and probably into the face of the nice mountains we were pictured in front of!

uh oh, not good :-(

So we decided to call it a day. My son wanted to get the chair-lift and gondola back down but - and I think it's a psychological thing from snowbarding - I just can't go down in a gondola, only up!!

So, with much protestation from the teenager we set off down Mont Chery.

Off back down we go :-)

...admittedly quite underprepared... although we were sunblocked up (I saw to that before we left the chalet!) and had perhaps enough water as we had 1 1/2 litres, but I was wearing sandals and had no head protection and my hair is quite fine and parts easily to reveal nice bare white scalp (the reason for buying this hat at V Festival a few weeks ago!)

The boys and some scenery:

Cute wood carvings!

another gratuitous shot of Mont Blanc ;-)

Sorry about the smudge on the lens!

and here you are, a happy leaf...

use your imagination! ;-)

I saw this bijou chalet on the way down, I really want it, it's tiny and essentially useless if there are more than 2 of you but oh-so cute!!

The going was pretty steep underfoot and quite loose and gravelly at times. But there was way more grass and earth than on the route taken the other day so we... well Joe... decided we should revisit the mountain, complete with bikes, after lunch.

Lunch was something else. Look at this pizza, does it not make your mouth water?

yumtastic pizza mmm drooool

The café was lovely and we sat outside, but it was so hot that our cutlery was hand-scorchingly hot!

Still, had a lovely lunch and even the bill-holder was cute, look at this:

So, with a belly full of pizza we all set off with our bikes to the gondola and took them to the halfway point. We then began the not-insignificant task of cycling up the mountain... it was bloody hard work and there were times when both Ryan and I had to get off and push our bikes.

Fortunately Joe - who does actually have the patience of a saint with the boy (if and when he's actually putting some effort in!) - stayed behind with Ryan while I ploughed on ahead - basically, if I stopped cycling I couldn't get started again because it was so steep!!

It went on like this for what felt like an eternity before we finally got to the bottom of the mother of all climbs - just at the final ascent of Mont Chery. It was basically vertical, I didn't even attempt the first bit, just watched amazed as Joe somehow got up, although I was worried at some places when he kept falling off and apparently the gradient was so high that his front wheel kept coming up!!

I cycled the last bit, which was the hardest climb ever but I managed it and was very happy, if knackered! Then came my boy, pushing his bike up... but then, he actually got on it and cycled some of the last bit too! wow what a star!

Here's him reaching us, and just about to fall down with exhaustion! You can't really see the path behind him after a point as it's so steep!

I was very proud of him, we both were :-)

The plan was that we'd cycle up to the top and get the chair lift down with our bikes to the gondola. Nuh uh. We weren't allowed to take the bikes on the chair lift as there was nowhere for them to go. Felt a bit stupid that we'd not worked that out, although I'd had a sneaking suspicion given that I'd seen nobody at all with bikes travelling on them at any point... hmmm rocket science it was not!

The problem too was that the weather was closing in as well and it actually started to rain a little - complete contrast to the scorching weather earlier!

Anyway, there was nothing to it, we had to set back down.

This proved infinitely more difficult than the way up in terms of the technical skill required - which neither my son nor I possessed!

However, as I rode on a bit I started to get the hang of it, knowing to keep basically a constant light pressure on the back break and then lightly pumping the front brake when needed... and not breaking when going over large rocks/humps also helped!

Unfortunately my poor son was a little further behind me in the competence stakes and, after informing me that he was okay to go ahead of me, I watched helpless as he froze when going over a bumpy bit and totally lost it! He didn't break at all and even took both feet off the pedals! His body had obviously decided it wanted to evacuate the vehicle, which it then did... with a plonk and a loud cry!

Panic!! We were halfway up a fucking mountain. Luckily the boy decided to ditch on the path and not over the edge. No broken bones, just some scraped skin and hurt pride.

We then basically nursed him down the rest of the mountain to the gondola. I went ahead very slowly and actually started to really love the bumps and dips - maybe there's a mountain biker in my after all?? And Joe stayed behind with the boy to make sure he was okay.

When we got to the gondola it was a bit of a relief to find it still working but I did feel like it was a bit of a loss as we'd just finally managed to persuade my son to get on and cycle a bit as it was flat - and then he was getting off again!

Anyway, Joe went on ahead because he said he'd seen a 'green' track down the mountain so was going to try it out. If it was okay for us we'd do it together the next day.

So that was that and off he went. When my son and I got to the bottom we rode back on the roads which was fine - phew!

Here's my son's war wounds - pretty impressive huh?

While we were there there were two injuries I learnt of. One of the guys who worked at the hotel broke his collarbone and another woman fractured her wrist - ouch!

When Joe got back he told us that he was very glad we didn't attempt the green route as apparently pretty much the entire route was through a forest full of trees! the trees were padded but it was still scary, steep and rocky at times - green? really??!

Anyway, that was the end of our adventures for the day and we went down for dinner, which was very nice actually! It was chicken breast with a nondescript creamy sauce plus potatoes and veg. I can't remember what the pudding was as I've left my food diary at work (I started typing this in the afternoon at my desk and now it's nearly midnight!!), I think it was apple tartlett, we had that one day, very tasty it was too :-)

More tomorrow about Wednesday - though with less pics, I calmed down a bit on the snapping as the holiday went on! :-D

As a taster... Wednesday was our epic mountain ascents by bike. Thursday was white water rafting, Friday was our walk to Morzine and Saturday we finally managed to do paragliding...

Holiday in French Alps - Days 1 and 2

Good afternoon :-)

I just thought I'd pop on and make a start at the photo diary of our fab activity/fun/sun/(a bit of rain)-filled holiday in Les Gets, France

Firstly, here's a map link so you can see the location of our 'Hôtel Le Chamois‎'.

If you click on the reviews I can safely say I agree with all the bad and good ones... a real mixture of feelings towards that place, I can safely say I will NEVER stay there again, but not that I won't holiday again with Alpine Elements, or in the same region...

Sunday 30th August
This was painful, we had to be up at 04:30 to get to the airport to get our flight, ouch.

Saying that, as the flight was less than 2 hours, and the transfer from Geneva Airport (woo hoo, I've visited Switzerland this year now too! ;-) ) was only just over an hour, we were at our hotel reasonably early which meant we got to unpack and chill out for the afternoon :-)

In the evening we went down to the bar area and listened to Kelly, our rep, explain which activities had been arranged for us and to tell us some more about what we could do. Although the Alpine Elements (AE) site had said there were many other activities that could be taken, Kelly wasn't very clear on these and when I asked her about them later she was even more vague, lol!

One thing I did get out of her was that we could do paragliding... which I had seen people doing from the coach as we were approaching Les Gets.

One thing you have to realise about me is that I'm actually really bloody scared of heights! I remember the first time I climbed up an artificial climbing wall... I got to the top, looked down (big mistake) and just about managed to whimper "can I come down now, please....?"

nowadays I'm still scared when climbing high walls, but some sick part of me loves the adrenaline rush and the fierce incessant pounding of my heart in my chest... so hard it feels like it might leap out of my mouth!

Also I love the quote "do something each day that scares you" - this is usually fulfilled with my daily bike commute as I'm such a pansy on the London streets (although with good reason, it's pretty damn scary in this city if you're only on two wheels!)

So I thought paragliding, or parapenting as it's called in France, would be the perfect scary thing to try next...

We booked a session for 11am on Tuesday morning and then had dinner.

Dinner was really nice, it was beef and mushroom stew... cooked perfectly, i.e. the beef was so soft it just fell apart. the sauce was pretty bland, even after I peppered it to hell, but it was a nice meal. Afterwards was sticky toffee pudding, mmm, one of my faves :-)

We were only meant to share a bottle of red wine but one of the staff members knocked our bottle over spilling the contents of my glass on the table... thankfully not on me though. Poor lad, he was so embarrassed and took our bottle away saying he'd bring another to replace it. He did, *plus* the other bottle which still had loads in it so we ended up drinking more than planned!

Monday 31st August
Monday was glorious, weather-wise... unfortunately we slept in a bit too late so didn't end up picking up our mountain bikes til fairly late in the morning. This wasn't a problem though as we were right at the end of the season so there were tonnes of bikes available :-)

The 'continental breakfast' offered by the Chamois was puzzling to say the least. I don't think I've had a continental breakfast that didn't included croissants and cold meats but I can safely say I've never had one that didn't include croissants!!

Every day the 'continental' breakfast consisted of French stick served with big slaps of butter, coco pops, cornflakes, muesli and then some form of egg - at least twice this was greasy sloppy fried egg, blergh... not exactly sure which continent this breakfast was supposed to have come from!

Anyway, so we faffed around after breakfast for a bit and then went and got our bikes, we were all riding the Kona Firemountain which is a pretty fabulous hardtail I must say! Maybe it's just because I'm not used to MTBs with disc brakes, but I absolutely loved these. They were selling them off for £200 at the end of the holiday, really wish I'd bought one for Ryan now...

We started off by having lunch (good start!) at a restaurant called L'Op Traken, to our shame the guy running the place spoke perfect English (just as well!). This place was fab, I had a salad with egg and green beans which turned out to be enormous, my son had a fromage et jambon omelette and Joe had their chef's special assortment of meat... which was advertised as just having spicy pork sausage and cheese... in actual fact it had just about every meat you could think of (bar horse - I hope!) and came with an extra salad, huge lumps of cheese and bread!

There were some very cute and rather tenacious little sparrow-like birds everywhere... very sweet and tame to boot!!

The previous night one of the bike shop staff members had recommended we try the Port Du Soleil route between Les Gets and Morzine which is the neighbouring resort and the one most people have heard of/been to that I've spoken to about the French Alps. The dude said it was a nice run that the whole family could do... so after our mahoosive lunch we all set off.

Here's a map of the route:
If you click on the pic it'll open it up large for you to see properly. Basically the route we attempted is from the right of the Les Gets sign, through Les Nants and Les Mouilles and down towards the village - it's the 'orange' route - which means it's not graded. However... I'm pretty sure that on the map we have there was no red route running alongside it (red means difficult!! green = very easy, blue = easy, red = difficult and black = very difficult) as if there had been I'd have thought twice about attempting it!

The route started off on the road and then we hit the track which turned into a bumpy horrible gravelly stony steep bastard-from-hell route which scared the wits out of my son and I - even Joe wasn't so sure as he's a road cyclist, he's used to whizzing along on tarmac and that's it!!

The thing about the track was that it was full of loose rocks... if it had been grass or concrete we'd have had more traction but there was nothing and if we braked our wheels just went out from underneath us - very scary, we were quite high up!!

Joe didn't take into consideration that my son and I would be quite scared and had the 'well if I can do it, why can't you?' attitude which got mine and son's backs up and resulted in huge amounts of stress and arguments to boot!

Just when we'd finally got fed up having spent at least an hour stressing out, getting off bikes, pushing them down tracks, son falling off bike, then getting back on, then off, then stressing some more before I said we should just call it a day... a breakthrough came in the guise of some concreted roads - hurrah!

However, this led uphill, quite steeply too (hurrah revoked), but we ploughed up them and finally came out at this
we made it to Les Mouilles which has the most gorgeous little chapel where we were able to rest a bit.

We decided to go on but the track was even more dreadful and very steep downhill so we pushed our bikes down some more and hit the outskirts of Morzine. We couldn't see a route through which didn't involved riding on the roads, which I wasn't prepared to do as my son had never ridden on the roads before in London and these were busy main ones with people driving on the opposite side to the one we're used to!

We turned back and I managed to cycle most the way back up but my son had lost motivation entirely and was being a slow arse, which riled Joe, and made it more stressful, grr

All in all, despite the wonderful weather, it was a hugely stressful day and really tested us as a family

We got back, sat outside in the sun, had a beer (son sat on a rock, as you do ;-)) and chilled out, calmed down, and started to like eachother again.

Dinner was quite nice, we had cheesy garlic bread to start followed by lasagne which wasn't the most delicious in the world but really did the trick. The dessert I loved, it was a simple shortcrust biscuit with some fruity sauce... it reminded me of school dinners, I used to love the biscuits and yogurt we'd get, the more cooked/burnt(!) the biscuit was, the better!

So that was the end of day 2, well day 1 really I guess as Sunday was spent mostly travelling and finding our feet.

Anyway, will write some more tomorrow, have to go home now as it's quite a bit later than when I started typing this!!

More soon

sunny afternoon...

...in London and I'm sneezing my head off - typical! I read something by Jenny Eclair in the current issue of 'Living South' (just south of the River that is... it doesn't cover half the country!) about her recent trip abroad - to Bulgaria I think - where her bloke's sinus issues totally cleared up and she could sleep peacefully with a snore-free fella!!

of course, as soon as they got back to the good old UK his sinus 'issues' reappeared - this city sucks for air cleanliness!!

anyway, I'm off home in a mo, not going to make the same mistake as yesterday and leave too late to go to the gym... I've a date with some weights!

TJx

P.S. I got up at 06:15 for psycho spin this morning, go me!

P.P.S. THEN I cycled to work, go me more haha!

P.P.P.S. I just 'tried' to eat a Boots 'Body Build' protein bar... it sounded great, chocolate and strawberry flavour, only 157 cals and 3.9g fat per bar and 20g of protein to boot!

it's fucking minging, excuuuuuse ma french, but it is... really quite revolting... I managed half but I'm going to have to bin it... sorry Boots... I love your store, I regularly spend over £100 there on creams, potions, lotions and make-up (and I don't even wear makeup really during the week!!), but I have to say that your 'Body Build' bar is just rotten

P.P.P.P.S. forgot to say, I uploaded holiday snaps to Flickr so will be dipping into them for the best ones soon :-)

back in the U of K

okay so that doesn't really make sense but I couldn't think of a better post title

HELLO!!

I'm back (as you've already guessed prior to that emphatic greeting)

I'm gutted at being back, but back nonetheless. No disrespect to good old blighty but I think I might be falling in love with France and French people - even if they do smoke too much (my paragliding instructor smelled of stale fags... he was dead cute and sensitive though which made up for it - a bit!)

(God I hope Joe never reads this blog haha, he does make a token effort sometimes and scans it but I think I waffle far too much for his liking ;-) )

Anyway, I can't really post too much as I'm at my place of employment but I wanted to say that I haven't forgotten a) you guys and b) my mission - i.e. Maximuscle Body of 2009!

I may have been neglecting to post as much as I should, and appearing to be eating more and exercising less but appearances can be deceptive and having spent a week on an activity holiday I can say that I'm feeling fab... even if I did probably consume more than my body weight 10 times over in red wine (not my fault I hasten to add - if a 2002 bottle of Bordeaux costs 5 freakin euros!!!)

so, will give you a blow-by-blow account of my rather fabuloso holiday later (hopefully) when I'm home and have dealt with the boring shit like the mountain of dirty smelly clothes that we've got to wash and hang up, blerghhhh - in some ways a beach holiday would have been better as it would just be bikinis to wash and I'd be more tanned!!

I also need to upload piccies from my camera so will do that too

in the meantime, here's a few pics that I took with my rubbish Blackberry phone camera (apologies for poor image quality but I doubt it's even 2 megapixels worth!!)

Here is the view from the top of Mont Chery, if you squint real hard at the screen you can see Mont Blanc in the background - it's the white blurry pointy thing

sorry!

I have taken some pretty sweet ones from the day we actually managed to paraglide/pente and will upload them soon :-)

This one's slightly better... here's the view from halfway up Mont Chery. We went there on Tuesday morning to paraglide but the wind was blowing too strongly in the wrong direction so I suggested we walk all the way down the mountain - it was fun but harder work than I thought - we cycled back up it later that day, but more about that at another time ;-)

and here, for your entertainment, is the largest 'Baby'Bel I've ever seen - my son looks suitably impressed too - and Joe's demonstration of just how much fun can be had with a single orange peel.... hmm

all the above demonstrates is that my boyfriend is rather 'special' and my son needs a haircut... but refuses... he's going to get all emo on me soon, I can just see it happening!

that's enough for phone pics, they're a bit pants, the camera ones are much better :-)

speak soon!
